Diploma And Doctorate Years

I studied mathematics with subsidiary subject physics (in particular, astronomy) at the University of Bochum. In addition, I worked as a student assistant at its Institut für Neuroinformatik as well as a physics tutor in two hospitals. I also spent some time at the Technical University of Tampere in Finland and the Technical University of Vienna in Austria. My diploma thesis was supervised by Dietrich Braess and is settled in the field of combinatorial optimization and is entitled "Näherungsverfahren für das Problem des Handlungsreisenden", which literally translates to "Approximation algorithms for the travelling salesman problem".

I started working on my doctorate thesis at the Center for Applied Computer Science in Cologne and finished it at the Institute for Mathematics of the Technical University of Cottbus. The thesis was supervised by Winfried Hochstättler and deals with theoretical and practical aspects of a new combinatorial optimization problem which arose from the automobile industry. It is entitled "Color sequencing". You can view a presentation (in German) by Winfried Hochstättler and Robert Nickel that illustrates parts of it.

A list of projects and tutorials during these years is available. You can also examine my mathematical genealogy.
